How is it then that this document was so rousingly celebrated that every year we stop for a national holiday in the U.S. to honor it?
“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.”
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,…”
… and finally, the signers acknowledge and hold themselves accountable to a higher power…
“We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States;…”
This was not done just for themselves, it was done in the Name of the People of the colonies that would become this country. We celebrate this every year. We’ve celebrated it for 237 years. How is it an atheist finds a way to deny the obvious? Does the Emperor really wear new finery for them? I doubt it… …these men pledged everything!
“And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” Few today pledge any one of these three attributes to anything, let alone all three for the sake of a nation. This is the pledge our military and safety service workers make and why we honor them so.
I love to sing, so here are a few more retorts to the atheist monument erected in Florida a week ago…
“God bless America. Land that I love. Stand beside her, and guide her, through the night with the light from above.” Go ahead, tell me the rest isn’t singing in your mind already….
“America, America, God shed His grace on thee. And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.”
“Our Fathers’ God, to Thee, Author of Liberty, to Thee we sing. Long may this land be bright with Freedom’s holy light. Protect us by Thy might, great God our King.”
And a stanza from the National Anthem you’ve most likely never heard or read;
“Oh, doth be it ever when freed men shall stand, between their loved homes and a war’s desolation. Blest with vict’ry and peace, may this heaven rescued land praise the power that has made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, and this be our motto, ‘In God is Our Trust’. And the Star Spangled Banner in triumph does wave o’re the land of the free and the home of the Brave!”
There are more, many more… but this is a web log, not a history book or song book. I’m just enticing you to find and read more about our founding history. And, you might want to talk with a lawyer about what principles the laws of our land are based on. You’ll probably be very surprised.
